The game had some really clever shortcuts and mechanics to save time, but I don't think any of them are immediately obvious, so it's possible for players to miss a lot of them. To be honest, at the end, I looked at a walkthrough (don't judge me) because otherwise, I felt I was at risk to not finish the game if I failed too many times the ending sequence (which consists on multiple steps you have to do every time without shortcuts). Even when I found solutions by myself, I was not THAT satisfied.Īnd when you start to hesitate, the fact that you only have 22 minutes per run quickly discourages you to try again and again the same routine in order to arrive at the step where you wanted to experiment a bit more. I felt the frontier between exploring and solving puzzles in order to explore more was the frontier that diminished the fun I had with the game. My favorite games include Portal 2, Return of the Obra Din, Testament of Sherlock Holmes. And I have to point out the fact that I love games that want you to think. When you learn how to navigate in a planet, you feel like a whole world opens up for you.īut after that first part, I felt the games enigmas were too cryptic. You feel like an explorer lost in the immensity of the universe. Each planet has rules that translate very well into a video game experience. Even though I spend 20 hours on the game, I never really felt the "wow, amazing" feeling after discovering the mechanic of each planet. How is that not the most kickass space exploration in any game? Like not even AAA games does this.I just finished the main game (still have to do the DLC). You can even experience the freaking coriolis effect. Outer Wilds features planets in actual orbits that you can seamlessly fly between, no loading zones, no cutscenes, in a fully simulated star system. I balked hard at how space and the planets were laid out. I finally get the codes and launch into space and… I was pretty disappointed with how exploration works. So basically a lot of people will be turned off the game. They're both so confident in their vision without worrying about if anyone finds them boring or weird They both have an opening that gives a rather misleading impression of what the rest of the work is like. They're both committed to hard sci-fi concepts to the point where someone not interested in that will find confusing. And the more I think about it the more the comparison to 2001 works. In the masters thesis that Outer Wilds started as, 2001 space odyssey is listed as an inspiration.
